Most of you know that I tried to balance a fulltime “regular job” and squeezed in my guiding as best I could by using vacation and weekend scheduling. Well, this didn’t work out so great. We made mistakes. Many of you didn’t get any or all the dates that you wanted and for that I sincerely apologize. It broke my heart, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
Lesson learned and we move on to 2010. The plan at this time is to Guide full time for the 2010 season. I’m going to put everything I have into growing and making Wildwood Float Trips the finest outfitter and Guide service in the Upper Midwest. My family is firmly behind me and without them I couldn’t make this dream a reality. God has truly blessed me with a great support system over the years.
Times are tough as we all know. I recently was laid off from my full time job. I have to watch the way that I choose to market Wildwood. Sadly, I won’t be at the Chicago Fly Show for this reason and the Minneapolis Show is still up in the air. I love these shows and will miss them, as well as my clients that attend them. I am going to use this opportunity to really try and market and grow Wildwood Float Trips in different avenues as best I can. I hope to return to both these shows in 2011.
Once again, I want to thank all of you for your support once again. God has also blessed me with the greatest client list a Guide could ever hope for. Things are really starting to book up for 2010. I know that Guides always say this but it is true. If you are looking for a date for this coming season, please contact me so you don’t miss out. There are only so many days in the summer.
The Smallmouth Trip from Hell will still take place this year. Bob White has agreed to help this year. Tight Lines had to bow out this year due to scheduling difficulties. I called Bob and he jumped at the chance. I am really looking forward to fishing and guiding with Bob. We are going to try and run it both ways this year. Dates are June 23rd-26th and the second leg will run from the 27th-30th. Call me for more details.
We are also thinking about putting together another Spring Creek weekend in South West Wisconsin’s Driftless area. I have grown to love this outstanding area almost as much as Montana.
Also look for a Fall Musky Trip this year. Some of you have seen the giants that live in the river and they are amazing. There are a couple of 50+ inch fish swimming in there. Let’s stick one!
Give me a call and let’s talk about all the excitement for this year. Keep an eye on the website for updates and information about where we’ll be and what is going on.
Wildwood Float Trips is a family run business and we want you to know we appreciate your business.
See you this summer on the river.

God Bless,
Kip Vieth and Family

Wildwood Float Trips

2008 a look back

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290431643799520642" style="FLOAT: left; We caught a lot of real trophy fish this last year and had a great time doing so. I'm really looking forward to 2009 and spending some more time on the great water we have in this neck of the woods. I continue to learn more about these great fisheries and how good they really are.

God has blessed me with great clients and great resources to use. 2009 might have a different look to it. I continue to struggle on how to make this thing a permanent job. With the tough economic times and jobs getting harder to find things might be a bit different. I will still guide this summer but it might be scaled back just a bit. I have been fostering other guides to work for Wildwood and believe I now have some of the best rivers guides you can find. As I watch the snow fall I keep thinking about high water for the spring and all those smallmouth sitting tight to the bank for the taking.

I hope everyone has had a great Christmas holiday and that the Lord has blessed you! The bass are really heating up and the rivers are in great shape. We had an outstanding day on the Rum River this week. It is a hidden gem in all the great smallmouth waters that surround the Twin Cities. We took several 18" fish and had one over 19". The last couple of summers the water had been extremely low, making it hard to float. This year the water levels are up and the fishing has been very good from all reports. The Mississippi and the St. Croix continue to produce as they usually do. The fish are now relating to more mid river structure and bars. Start to fish the drops and mid river boulders and you should find the fish. Still have a couple of dates in August and September if you are looking to still get out. Hope everyone is having a great season and we'll see you on the rivers.

Trip from Hell and More !

Well we made it through another "Smallmouth Trip from Hell." This trip just gets better every year. The fishing this year was outstanding. All the rivers fished great including the St. Croix. According to the boys from Tight Lines in Green Bay the St. Croix is hell on earth. It seems every time they come this way the winds blow and the river proves to them who the real boss is. Not this year. The weather was outstanding and the fishing was off the hook. Top water all day with several large fish taken including one over 20". This trip is the highlight of my summer. Everyone is really into it and we all feed off of each other. I want to thank all the guys that went along for the ride and I know you'll be back next year.

Fishing has been pretty good so far this summer. We have had many great days on the water already. Things are starting to finally settle down and the fish have been responding. The top water bite has been fairly strong all year, with the old reliable minnow patterns proving once again to be a go to fly.

Still some open dates but they are filling fast. Give us a call if you would like to experience the greatest smallmouth fisheries in the world!

Bass season has officially kicked off!!

Well it is finally here. Bass season is in full bloom. The last two weekends have been a very busy time for me. Memorial Day weekend I had the pleasure of fishing the Menominee River in Northeast Wisconsin with Bart and Matt from the Tight Lines crew. What a great river loaded with quality smallmouth. We always have a great time when all the guides get together for a day on the water. I think they are some of my most cherished days of the year. We all get a chance to fish and to rib each other. It's great fun. My niece graduated that weekend also so we had the pleasure of spending some time with my family also.

This weekend found me on my home water the Mighty Mississippi. Fishing was pretty good. The water is high and dirty and with all these fronts rolling through the fish seemed a little moody. We still managed to catch quite a few and boy did it feel great to be on the water again. The rowers seat is my second home and it felt great. It's is going to be a great year and I'm really looking forward to it.

If you wold like to book a date please do so soon the calender is getting pretty crowed. If your interested in the smallmouth trip from hell there is some room available.
Please call or e-mail if you have any questions.
Looking forward to a great 2008.

God Bless!

Kip

We are spoiled!!!

We'll we got back form the Bighorn river last Monday night. We had a great time despite the 50mph winds and the 3,000 people that also thought it would be a great weekend to fish. Not many fish were caught, and Grace didn't get one either. She is however hooked for life. She got to sample Montana and the West. I think she fell in love with it. I told her if she had a great time on this trip she'll really love when the weather is better and the fish are a bit more willing to play. She toughed out the worst conditions that I've fished in for some time and was willing to keep at it. She proved her salt and is welcome on any trip.
The experience really got me thinking. Man do I have it good here in the Upper Midwest. There are hardly any crowds on the rivers I fish and the fishing really is world class. If I see one or two boats on the water during the day I wonder what is going on. I know that this is going to start happening more and more as people learn how good we have it, but I can never see it as bad as I did this last weekend. There were at least three people in each hole and I bet we saw at least 100 boats on Sunday.
I encourage everyone to step back a little and look what we have right in front of us. The fishing here is as good as anywhere. It might not be trout but I'll take a 18" smallmouth over a 18" trout any day of the week. We are blessed to live in such a great area that is basically unknown.

Get out and enjoy it!!!!

Kip

Is it the trip or is it planning and Packing?

A big Bighorn River Rainbow from a few years back. Hopefully to be repeated this year.

In three days my daughter Grace, friend Jim(I use that word loosely) and I are head the the Bighorn River in Montana for a long weekend trout excursion. This will be Grace's first big fishing trip and I'm praying that it goes well. All I'm asking for is that she catch just one nice trout (16"+) on her own. Hopefully this isn't to tall of an order.

This brings me back to my title of this post. Is it the planning or is it the trip? I'm one of those guys that takes almost more pleasure in the planning stage. Don't get me wrong, I love the trip part too, but I think it is the planning and anticipation that I get a bigger kick out. Maybe it has something to do with Grace going along, but this trip really has me giddy. I have been tying flys, ordering things I don't really need, checking the boat at least once a day, and driving my wife a little nuts.

My friend Jim will show up at the house the night we leave with his stuff and we'll leave. That's it, he'll just be glad to be out of the office for a few days. I on the other hand am to busy getting everything just so before the trip. I think he knows there's not to much to worry about because I have that handled for everyone involved. I have been lying awake at night thinking about what flys to use, what holes to fish, and what to do if someone beats us to them. I shouldn't do this because usually a trip never matches ones anticipation.

Please post comments on what your thoughts are on the question.

I would love to get others ideas.

I'll let you all know how it goes on a post when we get back.

There is still plenty of room for our spring creek trip on April 17th thru the 20th. Give me a call if you are interested.

I also one spot to fill on the smallmouth trip from hell.

Give us a call on booking days and we'll be happy to speak with you about the up coming seasons dates.

Kip

Were did the time go?

Here are some of the highlights to the season that was 2007. The first picture is Joseph Meyer from One More Cast In Chicago with probably the nicest fish of the year. 5+ lbs. The picture doesn't do the fish justice. The second is my son Truman with his first true fish on the fly rod. The last to are a couple of Musky that were boated during the "Trip from Hell."

I can't believe it is the day after Christmas! I see that my last post was late August. I'm sorry for not doing a better job of keeping everyone up to date. I will try harder this coming year. When the season is rolling and it is one trip after another, post on a blog is not number 1 on the to do list. I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and the celebration of our Saviors birth was a blessed one.

Well show season starts in just over a month. Thoughts of the summer to come will begin to creep into our minds and the hope that it will bring another fabulous summer of fishing. This last season was one of the better I can remember. We landed many nice fish and shared wonderful hours on the river with each other.

I am busy starting to tie some flys, looking for that magic bug that will drive the fish crazy. Tying is not one of my favorite past times but it keeps me out of trouble and thinking of different ways to fish and present fly in a more effective manner.

The boy from Tight Lines and I held our annual meeting on Christmas Eve Morning. This has become a bit of a tradition and I really look forward to it each year. We sit around drinking coffee and swapping stories from the past year. We did come up with the dates for the Smallmouth trip From Hell you have heard me talk about. This years trip is June 18 thru the 21st. We will start in Green Bay and work our way west. Four of the best smallmouth rivers in the country in four days. If you are interested in this trip let me know. We are only taking a max of four boats. Spots will not last long.

I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year and stop by and see us at the shows.

Welcome Back Gary!!!

One of my very good and dear friends made it back! It was a joy to have Gary back in the boat after some heart trouble earlier this year. We weren't ten minutes into the trip and Gary had his first fish on a black popper. I think the Lord was saying to both of us that it would be a great day to be alive and he didn't disappoint. Here's to many more trips Gary and more large smallmouth.

The bass are really going strong and with September here tomorrow it will only get better. The big boys are going to start their fall feed bag soon and if you want to be apart of it there are still a few choice dates left.

Joseph Meyer from One More Cast in Chicago land with a 20 inch, 5 1/2 lb giant. This gave me a chance for me to do some fishing. I headed east to the Rush River to enjoy a morning of Trico fishing. I sometimes forget in the heat of the smallmouth season what a great resource we have in our Western Wisconsin Spring Creeks. I had the whole river to myself and the bugs were coming of in droves. It was truly a beautiful morning to be alive in God's creation. I worked pod after pod of rising fish. Once I got into trout mode things began to click. It takes me a good half hour to get used to casting those delicate Trico patterns to smaller fish than I'm used to. To go from a size 2 streamer to a size 22 Trico spinner pattern is quit the culture shook for me this time of year. If you have a chance to get over and enjoy some early mornings on these great rivers i would recommend it. Don't forget the bass. They are really going strong and it is the heart of the season now!! They are really eating and some big fish are being taken.

Keep casting and God Bless,

Kip

The quest for 20

Many of my customers are on the quest for the illusive 20" smallmouth. Well one of them reached his goal on July 24th. Duane Phinney has been chasing large smallmouth with me for three years and all his hard work paid off. Duane got this brute on a popper making it all the better. Duane is a big smallmouth addict and I think they are now his number 1 target with the fly. The big fish are finally starting to make the presence known and the fishing the last few weeks has been very good. The temperatures are warm and so is the fishing. I think everyone that participated had and outstanding time . A lot of fish were caught including a couple of Muskie's. The rivers that we fished were great and we had a little of everything weather wise. Fishing four rivers in four days is a lot of work but well worth it. Each day brought a new river and a new adventure. Traveling across Minnesota and Wisconsin like a band of fly fishing Gypsies was the real test. After each days fishing the caravan would roll to the next destination. Stopping for dinner and then hopefully some sleep before the next day began. To say we were in it would be and understatement. It was great fun! When the trip ended Bart Landwehr(King of the North Woods and my partner in this adventure) looked at each other and we couldn't believe that it was over. We wanted to do it again. I guess we will but it will have to be next year. Thanks to all again and if you would like to get a spot on next years trip let us know and we will put you on the waiting list. The fishing is good so get out there. If you would like a date for this year there are still a select few dates open.

Keep Casting,

Kip

6/10/07 report

Well things are starting to get good. The fishing has been pretty good as of late. I'm getting ready for the Smallmouth trips from hell that are starting this Saturday. Look for a full report at the end of June. Both the St. Croix and the Mississippi are fishing pretty well. The numbers are there it is the size we are looking for. With the warm weather forecasted for this week things should really start to heat up. Get out and enjoy our great waters.

God Bless and Keep Casting,

Kip

It's finally here!

Well, the bass season has finally arrived! There is so much going on this time of year one has a hard time trying to focus on one thing. The trout fishing is in fun swing on the spring creeks bugs are everywhere and the fish are looking to eat. The driftboat is looking at me and wondering when we are going to go. Well we did a lot of both this week. Last week I had a trip down to the Driftless region of Wisconsin. The fishing was pretty good and in between the thunder boomers we managed to catch several nice brown trout including an 18". Then it was off to a graduation party for the weekend. Memorial Day then found me on the St. Croix River scouting for the upcoming Smallmouth Trip from Hell . I was joined by two of the best smallmouth guides in the business Bart Landwehr and Matt Olson from Tight Lines Fly Shop in DePere Wisconsin. To say we had a good time would be an understatement. There is nothing better than a guides day off with two of the best smallie hunters I know. We all caught several nice fish despite the 30 MPH winds. I think I took big fish honors. Those two might beg to to differ. The next day found Bart and I along with guide in training Brett Nelson floating the Upper Mississippi. Once again the wind decided to blow. It stated out slow but things picked fast. Several nice fish were caught with most coming on top water flies. This week I hope to get out for an evening with a future guide and one of my best fishing partners my daughter Grace to chase brown trout that are sipping sulfurs. Stayed tuned because were just getting started.

Keep casting and God Bless!

Kip

Spring is Here?

Well their calling for another foot of snow in the next couple of days. I don't know if spring has sprung or if it is on hold. I guess let it snow we need the moistures for the rivers and trout streams. I look at the calendar and Wisconsin's early C&R season is just 3 days away. It must be spring. You might need a good pair of snowshoes to get to the streams, but it will be worth it.

Show season is also in full swing. I would like to thank everyone at the Grear Waters Show in Chicago for stopping by and saying hello. It was a very nice show and next year should be even better. It is my first full lenght article. Look for the St. Croix River article and you'll see my name. I am kind of blown away by the whole thing. It is a pretty cool experiance to say the least.

We still have a few openings for our Sping Creek Weekend. It is on the weekend of April 19th-22nd. It will be held in Coon Valley and should be a great time to be fishing. There should be lots of bugs on the water. Give me a call if your interested, or if you would like more information.

I know there is a lot of snow out there, but get out there and fish. Spring is kind of here and it should be a great year.

Good Luck,

Kip

A good year!

It was a wonderful year for us here at Wildwood Float Trips. Going full time in this crazy business was a huge step. Thanks to everyone who made it that much easier. Grouse season was a good one and here is a picture from the National Grouse and Woodcock Hunt. Ginger and I were on the winning end of the hunt. It was a lot of fun. Thanks to both Jeff's from North Carolina for shooting so well.

We caught a lot of big bass this year and had many wonderful days on the river. Look for us at the upcoming shows. We would love to talk to all of you. Thanks again for a great year and I am looking forward to an even better 2007.

God Bless,

Kip

It's Hot!!!

Fishing on the rivers the last month has been outstanding. We have seen and taken many large fish! I have even managed to get out and get a few. I have been very busy as you probably know and posting on the blog has been hard. It's raining out today so I thought that I would take advantage and update you. With the recent rain and cooler temps, the water temps have come down. The fish have responded and are very active. There is always a clinker day thrown in just to keep you humble. Now is prime time to get out there and chase these larger fish. With the fall approaching faster than we would like things are going to get much better before they get worse. September I feel is the best month for chasing smallies. I can't wait, it is going to be great. We still have open dates for this great month. We would love to share these great rivers with you.

Kip

Getting in the Summer Rush!

Pictures:
Top : Chad Parris and Daughter on the Miss.
Middle: Happy Birthday Henry(Larry)with a St. Croix Smallie on a Diver
Bottom: Dave with his seconds fish on a fly rod a 19.5 inch St.Croix beauty.

Things are really starting to heat up. The rivers are very low for this time of year and fishing has been good but not great. The bigger bass seem to be hiding a little more this year than in the past. There are still out there, but just being a bit more difficult. Fish are now more likely to be found on the deeper troughs and humps closer to mid river structure. Streamer patterns have worked best for me in the last couple of weeks. If the fish seem to be hitting but not taking I have down sized and have seemed to pick up more fish. It is all about casting at this point in the year. The water is low and clear so long accurate casting will help increase your chances of hook ups. Position yourself off the drops and humps and bomb away.

On a side note I want to thank everyone that has offered there support to me after my fall. I fell in my garage on the 4th of July and broke my right foot and elbow while cleaning the boat. I have taken a few days off to try and recover and will be back at it this Saturday the 8th. The support my fellow guides, neighbors and the fishing community has shown is overwhelming. Thanks to all of you. It has meant a great deal, and to my customers thanks for your support and understanding. Get out and fish. The next few month are going to be great.

Keep Casting,
Kip

It's starting!!!

Well the smallmouth season is here and things are starting to heat up! The females are just starting to show themselves after recuperating from the spawn. We had our first 20" fish of the season yesterday. With the weather warming and the Mississippi River dropping things should only improve. The St. Croix River is at summer levels and is fishing pretty well. The Mississippi is just starting to turn on. In a couple of weeks it should be going full tilt. Don't forget those trout trips also. There are bugs hatching all over the rivers and the trout are eager to eat them. The last hour of daylight is the magic time take advantage of the hatches because they won't be lasting a whole lot longer. Good Luck and keep casting!

Kip

No Turkey but.......

My daughter Grace and I had a great time near Grantsburg Turkey hunting. We didn't get our bird but, we had an experience that neither of us will ever forget.
While sitting Saturday morning overlooking our decoys we had a surprise. I looked at Grace and asked her if she was alright. It was 5:30 AM and I don't think she has ever gotten up that early for anything. This was our second morning and needless to say she was feeling it. She gave me a thumbs up. Grace was sitting to my right so she could see up the hill and I was a few yard away looking down at our decoys were we had seen a couple of Toms the day before. Shortly after she gave me the thumbs up I heard her whisper "I think I see a Bear." Being a good father I thought for sure that see was giving me the needle like she has been known to do. A few seconds later the same sentence came out of here mouth. I gave her the SHHHH and proceeded to give a few hen yelps to bring in those Toms. I glanced over to her again and this time I was greeted by her eyes that were now as big as saucers. All she said was "Bear" very softly nodding up the hill. I turned around and sure enough there he was. I looked back at Grace and almost started to laugh. I then remebered my camera and wanted to get a picture. I got it out turned it on but couldn't find the bear in the veiw finder. I guessed at it and took the picture. He didn't care for the flash of the camera and proceeded to jump at us a bit and grunt. I quickly got to my feet and yelled at him. He took off running and Grace and I looked at each other in total amazement. After we calmed down I paced off the distance and he was less than 15 yards away. Needless to say it was quit the morning. Nothing was gobbling so we decided to go bluegill fishing. We had very good success and enjoyed a great fish fry. This weekend marks the opening weekend of the Smallmouth season and I will be out there looking for my favorite fish on a fly. Update on the holiday weekend will follow. Good luck to everyone.

Kip

Coulee Country with Truman

Spent the weekend of Mother's Day down in the Coulee Country. Before all you mothers yell at me for missing the sacred holiday, let me say that it was my wifes idea. Despite the lousy weather it was a great weekend. I got to show my son a little about what his father is so crazy about. The streams were in great shape but the fish could have be a little more friendly. We stayed at Rogers' Cottage and my son really loved the log cabin and the log furniture. I think he thought that he was Danial Boone. I can't wait to get back down there. The water is warming on the Smallmouth waters and the opener is only 10 short days away. My daughter and I are chasing Turkeys this weekend in Grantsburg. Look for an update next week on that outting.

Southwest Wisconsin Weekend 4/28-30

I thought that I would get one last weekend of fishing before the early season was over. This is my annual trip to the coulee region before my season really starts to ramp up. Despite some rain it was a great weekend. I decided before I left that I was going to experiment on this trip. I decided that I would tie up some smaller versions of some of my smallmouth streamer patterns and give them a whirl. If you have have fished with me in the past you know how I love that white streamer pattern that will remain nameless. Friday night I started out throwing that and immediately started moving fish. The catch rate was low but I really had some big fish take a swipe at it. My eyes were opened to this pattern. I have never really thrown streamers that much. I called it smallmouth fishing for trout. That's how I approached it and boy did it work. Saturday I continued this game and was rewarded with a large brook. Saturday evening the rain finally showed up. I did manage to do some dry fly fishing with limited success. Sunday was gray and drizzly. The waters were a bit off colored but very fishable. I had lost all my white streamers on Saturday so I found a rubber legged bugger and decided to try that. The first hole that I fished I almost had my rod ripped out of my hand. I continued to throw that bugger all day and never lost it. Biggest fish of the day was a beautiful 18" brown. I'm going back in two weeks it was so much fun. If your looking for a great place to stay right on Coon Creek I can't recommend Rogers' Cottage enough. What a great place to stay at a very reasonable rate. I have already booked a cabin for Mother's Day weekend. His web address is www.rogerscottage.com check it out you wont be disappointed. Bill is as good as they come.

My first attemp

I thought that I would start one of these things just to keep visitors to the website up to date.
